Introduction

The engineering design process, often systematically used in other branches of engineering, such as mechanical or architectural engineering, is seldom applied in rock engineering. While it is sometimes claimed that rock excavations are actually designed, little attention is paid to the engineering design philosophy.

This journal is concerned with original research, new developments, site measurements and case studies in rock mechanics and rock engineering. It provides an international forum for the publication of high quality papers on the subject of rock mechanics and the application of rock mechanics principles It provides an international forum for the publication of high quality papers on the subject of rock mechanics and the application of rock mechanics principles and techniques to mining and civil engineering projects built on or in rock masses. These projects include slopes, open-pit mines, quarries, shafts, tunnels, caverns, underground mines, metro systems, dams and hydro-electric stations, geothermal energy, petroleum engineering, and radioactive waste disposal.

McClure, C. The objective of this paper is to summarize briefly the practical use of rock mechanics in design and construction of various types of structures. These range from foundation for industrial facilities, nuclear power plants, bridges and dams to tunnels and underground caverns. The use of rock mechanics has varied from performing a few laboratory unconfined compressive tests on core samples to complete field and laboratory tests for underground power caverns. The primary difference between the rock mechanics studies we have for construction projects and those most commonly found in the literature is that our tests must provide immediate answers to specific questions facing a design or construction engineer.

This study aims to dynamically analyze blasting conducted in the Nanjung tunnel. Nanjung Tunnel is a twin tunnel that has a horseshoe-shaped section with each tunnel having a dimension of The layers rock of this tunnel include silty clay, sandstone and dacite. During the blast, PPV measurements were taken at several points around the tunnel using a minimate. Dynamic analysis is done by building a Nanjung Tunnel model on the RS2 software with the finite element method. Input data in this modeling is endeavored to approach actual conditions in the field, such as tunnel geometry, rock mass properties, and blasting plans carried out at STA tunnels 2.

One of the tasks related to the repository development is the feasibility demonstration of the permanent repository closure, including long-term rock mass associated issues. The required lifetime exceeds the usual one of an engineering structure. The long-term behavior of the repository needs to be extrapolated from observation over a shorter time period, or from analogous natural caverns. Numerical methods are the most promising techniques to carry out the extrapolation. It is commonly understood that there are significant uncertainties in long-term predictions. Uncertainties can be mitigated by utilizing independent methods to assess long-term behavior and by improving the prediction capability of the calculation model in the short term. The moderately fractured rock mass is modeled using the Universal Distinct Element Code, released by Itasca.

Introduction

In conventional studies, the shear behaviour of a joint is usually investigated with …. The effect of infilling on mechanical response and crack behavior of pre-stressed rock with double rectangular holes under dynamic load was investigated through a series of coupled static—dynamic loading tests on diorite specimens in three …. Understanding the hydraulic fracture HF re-orientation mechanism from artificial weaknesses is critical to screen-out prevention in the petroleum industry and caveability management in the mining industry. An improved discrete element method is …. Structural—slip rockbursts are frequently faced in civil tunnels, which pose huge threats to the safety of personnel and equipment in tunnels.
