The Effects of Different Kinds of Nutrition and Functional Foods on Multiple Sclerosis

We’re proud to announce our new Best Bet Diet Cookbook.

There is no evidence that a specific diet can prevent, treat or cure multiple sclerosis MS. Some special diets can actually be harmful because they contain too much of certain vitamins or not enough of others. Overall, people with MS need a balanced, low-fat and high-fiber diet. Unprocessed or naturally processed foods are preferred to processed foods. This is similar to the Mediterranean diet, and the same healthy diet that's recommended for the general population. Also consider limiting alcohol as much as possible. Some research suggests that a diet low in saturated fats and supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids may benefit people with MS.

DOI : It is an assumption that different kinds of nutrition, diet, and functional foods might have different positive or negative effects on multiple sclerosis MS , a neuroinflammatory disease of the central nervous system CNS. This brief paper involved a study on various kinds of nutrition including salt, fat, dairy, fruit, and vegetables. At the end of this study, appropriate diets were evaluated for MS patients. Based on previous studies both on animal models and on MS patients, excessive dietary salt intake and animal fat had worsening effects on MS patients but fruit and vegetable intake helped the remission of MS and decreased the risk of developing it.

This review seeks to examine current research related to the role of diet in multiple sclerosis MS. Recent research in preclinical models, epidemiologic studies, and limited prospectively followed cohorts provide preliminary evidence that dietary factors influence MS incidence, disease course, and symptomatology. Current evidence for the effects of fatty acids, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and salt are reviewed. Dietary patterns including overall diet quality, caloric restriction, McDougall diet, Paleolithic diet, and Mediterranean diet are discussed. Hypotheses regarding potential mechanistic connections underlying observed effects are also presented. Several individual dietary components and patterns demonstrate potential for significant impact in MS. Definitive answers regarding the ability of diet to act as a disease modifier in MS will ultimately require large-scale clinical trials.
