In political terms, the communication system may serve to enhance democracy, or to deny it, or some combination of the two. Less commented upon, though no less significant, the communication system has emerged as a central area for profit making in modern capitalist societies. Much scholarly effort is therefore employed to assess the relationship between communication as a private activity, and the broader and necessary social and political duties that those same communication systems must perform.

This led to a surge of independent press, which in part led to the independence of Ghana. Its main use was to spread propaganda to gain support of the colonies [2]. Following the 6 March declaration of independence by Ghana from the United Kingdom , there were only around four newspapers. Leader Kwame Nkrumah eventually controlled all the press in Ghana and saw it as an instrument of state authority, providing propaganda that encouraged national unity and creating a hierarchal system of state apparatus to manage the media.

Media play a significant role towards the socio-economic and political development of all economies. However, if their operations are not properly and efficiently regulated it can lead to underdevelopment. Hence, this study focused on the prospects of regulating electronic media activities in Ghana by using the National Media Commission NMC as a case study. The mixed research method was used as well as primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interview guide. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques was used to select respondents for the study. The findings of the study revealed there are various existing regulations governing the electronic media in Ghana.

And how can media authorities address excessive media concentration if they don't know who is behind the media's steering wheel? Ownership structure may also affect the way the media industry manages its resources. It shapes the economic strength and efficiency of the media sector, which is of particular interest to potential investors.
