During disaster situations, pregnant women are among the most vulnerable groups that need special care. Disasters can adversely affect the physical and mental health of pregnant women, including preterm labor and intrauterine growth retardation, particularly when they have to evacuate to a public shelter. Thus, nurses should provide appropriate health care for disaster-affected pregnant women, including preparing nutritious food for health promotion, preparing proper sheltering, and providing counseling services to relieve stress. Moreover, the nurse should play a role in disaster preparedness for pregnant women in all disaster phases: pre-impact, impact and post-impact.

Nurses and other healthcare professionals are ready to handle just about any type of individual patient medical emergency, but, when faced with several hundreds or thousands of contaminated causalities that could be generated from a "weapons of mass destruction" WMD event, these same professionals may not be as ready as needed. Dr Veenema's 2nd edition of her acclaimed disaster and emergency preparedness reference for nurses can do a lot to get not only nurses but the entire medical community ready for such an event.
This 5-part compendium includes 31 chapters on topics ranging from leadership in disasters and crisis communications to environmental emergencies and radiological incidents. The authors of each chapter are well-known healthcare experts with extensive experience in the subject matter. The editor has also provided 13 appendices with additional information on Internet resources for disaster preparedness and concise summaries for clinical recognition and treatment of high-profile biological WMDs.
As an experienced emergency planner and public health professional, I decided to put Veenema's 2nd edition to the test. Veenema does not ignore what may be the single largest epidemiological disaster of modern times, the Milwaukee Cryptosporidium outbreak. While this biological disaster had relative low numbers of fatalities estimated to be more than , an estimated Milwaukee residents became ill with more than 4 hospitalized.
Both of these chapters should be mandatory reading for nursing students. This book will make an excellent edition to any medial library and is a must for schools of nursing. As more disaster preparedness and planning courses are included in nursing curriculums, this text will certainly become a classroom classic.

Featuring the most current, valid, and reliable evidence-based content available, this three-time AJN winner once again presents an unparalleled resource for disaster and emergency preparedness. Disasters lay heavy burdens upon healthcare systems that stretch all levels of society. While natural and man-made disasters are not new, the global nature, rate, type, and totality of their impact has only increased. The fourth edition of this foundational text uniquely addresses the rapid changes in these crises and analyzes the latest attempts to provide timely, multidisciplinary healthcare. Nurses consistently comprise seventy or more percent of responders to local, national, regional, and global crises, and represent a potentially untapped resource to achieve surge capacity goals and optimize population health outcomes.
We see all comers, from the worried well to the critically ill; from birth to death; and with conditions involving all parts of the mind, body, and spirit; from brain trauma to ingrown toenails. Our patients come to us trusting that we will respect their concerns and that we will provide care for them. As emergency nurses, we have a responsibility to respect that trust and provide our patients with the skill and expert knowledge required for their care. Emergency nurses see it all.

The survey investigated perceptions of disaster preparedness at the individual and institutional level. As a result of this narrative, the necessity for nurses to be familiar with disaster preparedness is often undermined. Respondents identified that the most important groups of skills required were cardiopulmonary resuscitation; haemostasis, bandaging, fixation, and manual handling; and emergency management. This study discovered that the lowest positive responses were in the Physiologic and Safety Needs but despite this result, nurses reported high job satisfaction and intend to remain in their present work environment.
Disasters and other emergencies are an unfortunate but very real fact of life. Anyone, regardless of their age, where they live, or what they do, can find themselves faced with an unexpected but dangerous situation that is beyond their ability to prevent. By being prepared, individuals can help lessen the chances of injury and death both during any potential incidents and after. Preparing for health emergencies and natural disasters also enables people to help others in a crisis. A first aid kit is a standard item to have when preparing for any type of emergency. They also include items such as bandages, gauze, tweezers, and gloves. People may carry a well-stocked kit in their vehicle for treatment of injuries that might occur when traveling.
