Thévenin’s Theorem – Circuit with An Independent Source

Well, the procedure is very simple. You may have noticed that the procedure for calculating Thevenin resistance is identical to the procedure for calculating Norton resistance: remove all power sources and determine resistance between the open load connection points. As such, Thevenin and Norton resistances for the same original network must be equal.

Derivation of Thevenin's and Norton's Theorems Using Two-Port Network Analysis Abstract: In this paper, a novel and simple method for deriving Thevenin's and Norton's Theorems using z-parameters of two-port networks has been developed. In a most general way, electrical networks with dependent and independent voltage sources as well as current sources, connected to a load impedance have been considered.

So, our goal is to find an equivalent circuit that contains only an independent voltage source in series with a resistor, as shown in Fig. Now, we need to find and. The current of resistor is zero because one of its terminals is not connected to any element; therefore, current cannot pass through it. Since the current of resistor is zero, the voltage source, and resistors form a voltage divider circuit and the voltage across the resistor can be determined by the voltage devision rule.

In circuit theory terms, the theorem allows any one-port network to be reduced to a single voltage source and a single impedance. The theorem also applies to frequency domain AC circuits consisting of reactive and resistive impedances. It means the theorem applies for AC in an exactly same way to DC except that resistances are generalized to impedances.
