This tutorial explains how to configure and use a default route in routing through a practical example in the Packet Tracer. Learn how to configure default routing in Cisco routers. When a packet arrives on an interface of a router, the router checks the destination network address of the arrived-packet and finds that destination address in the routing table. If the router finds an entry for the destination network, the router forwards the incoming packet from the interface that is specified in the entry. If the router does not find an entry for the destination network, the router checks the default route. If the default route is available, the router forwards the incoming packet from the interface that is specified in the default route. If the default route is not available, the router drops the incoming packet.

Static routing is a form of routing that occurs when a router uses a manually-configured routing entry, rather than information from dynamic routing traffic. Static routing and dynamic routing are not mutually exclusive. Both dynamic routing and static routing are usually used on a router to maximise routing efficiency and to provide backups in the event that dynamic routing information fails to be exchanged. Static Routes and the Default Gateway. Static routes are for traffic that must not, or should not, go through the default gateway. Routing is often handled by devices on the network dedicated to routing although any device can be configured to perform routing. Exceptions include traffic that must pass through an encrypted VPN tunnel or traffic that should take a specific route for reasons of cost or security. The default gateway is for any and all traffic which is not destined for the local network and for which no preferred route is specified in the routing table.
