Rules for Prepositions

A preposition is a word used to link nouns , pronouns , or phrases to other words within a sentence. They act to connect the people, objects, time and locations of a sentence. Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front of nouns. A nice way to think about prepositions is as the words that help glue a sentence together. They do this by expressing position and movement, possession, time and how an action is completed. Indeed, several of the most frequently used words in all of English, such as of, to, for, with, on and at, are prepositions.

Read the following sentences. Ram is going to the office. Pen is kept on the table. Dia will reach in 2 hours. All underlined word in the sentences given above show the position place or time or how things are related to one another. These words to, on, in etc.

Prepositions are relationship words. They provide clues and link the remainder of the sentence together. Given their important role, there are several important rules for prepositions to remember. These rules relate to how they can be used, which prepositions can be used when, and where they belong in the sentence.

If your students memorize the list of prepositions, they will be able to recognize prepositional phrases much more easily. If they separate these phrases from long sentences, they can better understand what they're reading, writing, or editing. Outside memorizing the list, referring to a preposition list on a chart is next best. Keep it handy for diagramming sentences.

Many French prepositions have more than one English equivalent, depending on how they are used — and vice versa. Then practise using prepositions in the free exercises. There is no apparent grammar rule to which verbs require a preposition and which do not, so it is a good idea to memorize the ones that do have a preposition attached. In addition, a preposition is often needed in French where none is used in English — and vice versa again. The preposition de is generally summarized as "of, from, or about," but it has quite a few more meanings and uses than that.
