A preposition is a word used to link nouns , pronouns , or phrases to other words within a sentence. They act to connect the people, objects, time and locations of a sentence. Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front of nouns. A nice way to think about prepositions is as the words that help glue a sentence together. They do this by expressing position and movement, possession, time and how an action is completed. Indeed, several of the most frequently used words in all of English, such as of, to, for, with, on and at, are prepositions.

If they separate these phrases from long sentences, they can better understand what they're reading, writing, or editing. Outside memorizing the list, referring to a preposition list on a chart is next best. Keep it handy for diagramming sentences.
Many French prepositions have more than one English equivalent, depending on how they are used — and vice versa. Then practise using prepositions in the free exercises. There is no apparent grammar rule to which verbs require a preposition and which do not, so it is a good idea to memorize the ones that do have a preposition attached.
