A Time and Frequency Measurement Technique Based on Length Vernier Abstract: A simple length vernier approach has been developed which uses the high stability and high speed of signal transmission and the relation of time and space. It can get high resolution, low cost and simple structure. Based on high stable transmission delay of the signal and the coincidence detection technique, the start and stop signals of a measured short time interval are delayed respectively in the different lines. The line length to transmit the start signal is longer than that of the stop signal according to the measurement resolution, and both of the lines are divided into small subsections according to the measuring precision.

Frequency is generally defined as the number of cycles which occur in a given interval of time. This interval is usually chosen to be the second. The interdependence of frequency and time interval requires that a standard of one be also a standard of the other. Similarly, it can be said that the measurement of frequency is based upon time measurement. While certain instruments will measure either quantity with equal facility, many methods apply to the measurement of one or the other. Therefore, the sections dealing with actual measuring techniques will present separately frequency measurements and time measurements. Unable to display preview.

A frequency counter is an electronic instrument , or component of one, that is used for measuring frequency. Frequency counters usually measure the number of cycles of oscillation, or pulses per second in a periodic electronic signal. Such an instrument is sometimes referred to as a cymometer, particularly one of Chinese manufacture. Most frequency counters work by using a counter which accumulates the number of events occurring within a specific period of time. After a preset period known as the gate time 1 second, for example , the value in the counter is transferred to a display and the counter is reset to zero.

1. Introduction

If the AC is being generated by an electromechanical alternator, the frequency will be directly proportional to the shaft speed of the machine, and frequency could be measured simply by measuring the speed of the shaft. If frequency needs to be measured at some distance from the alternator, though, other means of measurement will be necessary. One simple but crude method of frequency measurement in power systems utilizes the principle of mechanical resonance.

By counting seconds, we can determine the date and the time-of-day. And by counting events or cycles per second, we can measure frequency. Time interval and.
