As a class, SIMS instruments aka ion microprobes use an internally generated beam of either positive e. In a similar technique, a beam of high-speed neutral atoms e. Schematic depiction of SIMS source region. Details The interaction of the primary ion beam with the sample under vacuum provides sufficient energy to ionize many elements. If the primary beam is composed of positively charged ions, the resultant ionization favors production of negative ions; primary beams of negative ions favor generation of positive ions.

Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique used to quantify known materials, to identify unknown compounds within a sample, and to elucidate the structure and chemical properties of different molecules. This technique basically studies the effect of ionizing energy on molecules. It depends upon chemical reactions in the gas phase in which sample molecules are consumed during the formation of ionic and neutral species. The first step in the mass spectrometric analysis of compounds is the production of gas phase ions of the compound, basically by electron ionization. This molecular ion undergoes fragmentation. Each primary product ion derived from the molecular ion, in turn, undergoes fragmentation, and so on. The ions are separated in the mass spectrometer according to their mass-to-charge ratio, and are detected in proportion to their abundance.
Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry is a monthly, peer-reviewed journal that covers all aspects of mass spectrometry, including fields of scientific inquiry in which mass spectrometry can play a role. These fields include chemistry, physics, geology, and environmental science as well as the biological, health and life sciences. The journal publishes papers on both fundamentals and applications of mass spectrometry. Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry will follow standard policies ACS Publications has in place to ensure streamlined and robust practices and a positive author experience e. Research Article: Fundamental subjects include, but are not restricted to, instrumentation principles, design, and demonstration, structures and chemical properties of gas-phase ions, studies of thermodynamic properties, ion spectroscopy, chemical kinetics, mechanisms of ionization, theories of ion fragmentation, cluster ions, potential energy surfaces, and modeling. Papers that report on an application should have as a principal focus the use of mass spectrometry to solve a qualitative or quantitative problem.
