Coping and health in older adults

Although coping has been shown to influence physical health in younger populations, whether coping affects health in older adults appears to depend upon how coping and health are conceptualized. This article reviews recent literature on coping and health in older adults in three areas. Second, we describe ways in which coping may differ between older and younger populations. The recent literature suggests that coping may be a developmental and multifaceted process. Positive coping strategies may have positive and even protective effects on health, whereas negative strategies may have negative effects. The causes of ageing are uncertain; current theories are assigned to the damage concept, whereby the accumulation of damage such as DNA oxidation may cause biological systems to fail, or to the programmed ageing concept, whereby problems with the internal processes epigenomic maintenance such as DNA methylation [3] may cause ageing. Programmed ageing should not be confused with programmed cell death apoptosis.

Psychological Theories on Health and Aging refer to approaches that explain how healthy aging can be promoted and how diseases can be prevented or delayed.
