Role of brassinosteroids on horticultural crops

Yield, the mass of harvest crop product in a specific area, is influenced by several factors. The growth and development of early and late sown crops of hybrid squash Cucurbita maximaL. Consequently, the common definition of agronomy with reference to "field crops" should be revisited. Some processes of growth — inflorescence branching, spikelet development, and dry matter accumulation — were directly and irreversibly damaged by cold. Crops may use the micro nutrients in the soil in smaller quantities.

In agriculture, the term plant growth and development is often substituted with crop growth and yield. This is so because plant agriculture is mainly concerned with crops and their economic products. Indeed, a farmer may be concerned only with his corn crop and its grain yield. He may not consider other plants except the weeds which can have adverse effects on productivity. But the study of the science of crop production, or crop science, is not limited only to existing agricultural crops. For one, plants which may not appear useful now can be found useful later. By way of introduction to various related pages, this page distinguishes plant growth, differentiation, and development.

The Physiology of Vegetable Crops

Agriculture in LDCs cannot continue to be treated as a residual … Growth in plants is restricted to certain zones, recently produced by cell division in a meristem. Producing annual crops of high-quality fruit requires a balance between reproductive and vegetative growth. There are several things we can do to influence whether or not a bud becomes a flower bud or remains vegetative.

Vegetable farming , growing of vegetable crops, primarily for use as human food. The term vegetable in its broadest sense refers to any kind of plant life or plant product; in the narrower sense, as used in this article, however, it refers to the fresh, edible portion of a herbaceous plant consumed in either raw or cooked form. The edible portion may be a root, such as rutabaga, beet , carrot , and sweet potato ; a tuber or storage stem, such as potato and taro; the stem, as in asparagus and kohlrabi; a bud, such as brussels sprouts ; a bulb, such as onion and garlic ; a petiole or leafstalk, such as celery and rhubarb ; a leaf, such as cabbage , lettuce , parsley , spinach , and chive ; an immature flower, such as cauliflower , broccoli , and artichoke ; a seed, such as pea and lima bean ; the immature fruit, such as eggplant , cucumber , and sweet corn maize ; or the mature fruit , such as tomato and pepper.

With the progress of chemical synthesis technology, structurally modified brassinosteroids BRs with greater stability, under field conditions have been synthesized on a commercial scale and registered as plant growth regulators for specific horticultural crops. In both fundamental and application-oriented research, BRs and their analogues play prominent roles in various physiological processes including, seed development and germination, flower sex expression, fruit development, improvement of quantity and quality of crops, and resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. It is worthy to note here that the involvement of BRs in plant protection from adverse environmental stress and pesticides seems to have good prospects, since BRs appear nontoxic and environmentally friendly.

This research PDF in Sustainability evaluated land access dynamics availability, acquisition, and use changes on the introduction of passion fruits in East Africa Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda. Rapid population growth in fertile agricultural lands of East Africa creates land scarcity, which limits land access for new horticultural crops. This study has shown that land access among rural passion fruit farmers in Burundi, Kenya, and Rwanda is through inheritance, purchase, and leasehold arrangements. Land purchase and leasehold systems are modern methods and therefore could indicate the modernization of agricultural practice among smallholder farmers. These changes could also indicate an increase in the value of agricultural land and increased income for smallholder farmers. Crop abandonment could affect food production and household income, especially when prices of passion fruits fall. As such, this situation reveals the need to regulate the different modes of access to agricultural land to guarantee sustainable agricultural production and to avoid dysfunctions that may accentuate land conflicts.
