There is controversy about whether dental calculus is an etiological factor in periodontal disease, or is it just a predisposing factor. Dental Calculus is a calcified oral ecosystem or dental plaque, can accumulate on supragingival or subgingival. Plaque is a bacterial biofilm complex on the tooth surface, including pathogenic microorganisms that invade periodontal tissue.
Understand oral histology and learn to apply your knowledge in the clinical setting with this definitive reference. Updated and enhanced, it provides insight on contemporary research and trends in oral histology, embryology, physiology, oral biology, and postnatal growth and development essential to your success in dentistry! Note: Only Dental member can download this ebook.
It covers oral histology over 15 chapters, with molecular concepts highlighted throughout to increase understanding in certain areas, such as when cell function is discussed. Chapters covered include the structure of the oral tissues, embryology of the head and neck and tooth development, as well as more general chapters on the structures common to various cells in the body and their functions, and tissue repair and regeneration.
There is a new chapter on facial growth and development but this is brief and only provides an overview. The reader is subsequently directed to another text, which is cited, for more in-depth information.
The book is designed so that each chapter can be read discretely, with a brief introduction at the start and an outline similar to a table of contents. There is also the opportunity to register with the Evolve learning system online for access to a free study tool with review questions, exercises and an enhanced learning experience.
One of the best features of this book is the use of images and diagrams. There is a mixture of colour and monochrome images and they complement the text well. Not only do they aid understanding but they make the book more engaging.
The diagrams and histological images help the reader to gauge principles that would be hard to picture with just text and imagination. Scanning electron micrographs offer excellent detail and are well annotated for an undergraduate understanding.
The diagram on the development of the functional dentition from inception to the permanent dentition, although regarding content is excellent, was a little confusing and hard to decipher. The book mentions current research on the bioengineering of teeth and advances in implantology with scope for further reading in the recommended reading section, which is present at the end of every chapter.

Although the scope of the textbook remains histology, molecular concepts have been integrated in areas where they are essential for understanding embryogenesis and development, cell function, and tissue formation. Illustrations are almost all in colour now, and new figures have been added to facilitate visualization of the subject matter. The textbook is intended to serve as a learning guide for students in a variety of disciplines. The first chapter provides an overview of the subject matter covered in the textbook and sets the stage for a subsequent detailed treatise by topics. Although coverage is exhaustive, the text has been structured such that individual chapters and even selected sections can be used independently.

Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary science. The progress of tissue engineering for dental tissues is promising and various dental soft and hard tissues have been regenerated successfully in vitro using stem cells. Prior to their applications practically, there are a number of challenges and unanswered questions that need to be resolved for further progress. It is expected that in next two to three decades, the field of dentistry will be changed significantly by the availability of innovative tissue engineered products in dental office. The objective of this review paper is to highlight the progress of tissue engineering for various dental hard and soft tissues such as enamel, dentin, alveolar bone, periodontium, oral mucosa, and salivary glands.

Collagens are a large family of triple helical proteins which are found extensively throughout the body and are necessary to perform various functions such as tissue scaffolding, cell adhesion, cell migration, angiogenesis, tissue morphogenesis, and tissue repair.
Fragmentary tooth root development: biological and forensic dental implications. Recent findings indicate that there could be continued root development after the successful surgical removal of an impacted tooth. The paper provides a brief review of normal root development, emphasizing the chain of reciprocal epithelial-ectomesenchymal interactions which regulate all aspects of this process. Mineralized dental structures are not an absolute requirement for tooth root development, but residual fragments of Hertwig's epithelial root sheath HERS , together with the associated ectomesenchymal cells, will enable continued growth. The findings presented in this paper have significant implications in forensic odontology, dental litigation and for routine and elective tooth extractions. In , during the routine forensic identification of a mutilated corpse, a peri-apical radiograph revealed a sizeable residual root in the 38 area Figure 1.

Убирайся отсюда немедленно, или я вырву эту булавку из твоих ноздрей и застегну ею твой поганый рот. Парень побелел. Беккер попридержал его еще минутку, потом отпустил.
