Principles of Molecular Virology, Fifth Edition , provides an introduction to modern virology. Viruses are submicroscopic, obligate intracellular parasites that are more diverse than all the bacterial, plant, and animal kingdoms combined. The book examines protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid, and protein-lipid interactions, which control the structure of virus particles; the ways in which viruses infect cells; how viruses replicate; and the effects of virus infection on host organisms. The book begins with a history of virology, tracing the development of knowledge and research on virology. The text concludes with three appendices that feature a glossary and abbreviations; a classification of subcellular infectious agents; and an outline of the history of virology. Undergraduates and graduates in virology, molecular biology and microbiology; Medical students and infectious disease clinicians and immunologists; Those entering the virology research area, including plant virology and AIDS research. Are viruses alive?

Molecular Biology, Pathogenesis, and Control of Animal Viruses , a primer that defines and illustrates the basic principles of animal virus biology. Loeffler was referring to the then still unknown agent responsible for foot-and-mouth disease in cattle, whose etiology he searched for together with Paul Frosch The choice of these words by Loeffler reflects the complicated history of the science of virology. Although the earliest human records evidence that ancient peoples were aware of the effects of virus infection, and even carried out research into the causes and prevention of viral diseases, viruses have been recognized as distinct biological entities for only a little more than a century. A hundred years of enormous research efforts involving numerous excellent investigators have led to the appreciation that the vast world of viruses encrypts an enormous biologic, genetic and genomic diversity. A significant part of the virus world consists of animal viruses, an amazing group of infectious agents usually referred to by their ability to cause disease.
Harriet S. When a new book appears on my desk, I scan the table of contents, foreword, and lists of chapter contents if any ; browse chapters that contain material familiar to me; peruse areas of specific interest; and finally move to areas in which I need updating. After completing this process for Principles of Virology , I was absolutely delighted and decided that it is the first of its kind since Salvador Luria's General Virology. Imagine my surprise when I finally turned to chapter 1 and found that it opened with Luria's credo: "There is an intrinsic simplicity of nature, and the ultimate contribution of science resides in the discovery of unifying and simplifying generalizations, rather than in the description of isolated situations—in the visualization of simple, overall patterns rather than in the analysis of patchworks.
